Authentic in design and craftsmanship

6 March 2012

When designer Piero Gesualdi and textile designer Sara Thorn combined their respective talents and wealth of experience, they ignited a common passion for authentic design and  craftsmanship. It's Piero's architectural approaches to space and form that are equally complimented by Thorn's decorative approach to pattern, colour and textile techniques, that has brought their WorldWeave designer rug company such success and industry acclaim.

WorldWeave signature floor dressing collections are designed in Melbourne and woven in India. Utilising a combination of modern technologies and artisan hand skills, WorldWeave takes its inspiration from ancient sensibilities and techniques. It exaggerates, collages and re invents new ways of working with traditional and modern skills.

Their new collection Walkabout, which will showcase at Decoration + Design Melbourne, will be inspired by weave, geometry and nature. The rugs are made using only natural fibres including wool, jute and cotton, in natural palettes as well as hot and cool colourways for your floors and decor. All the rugs are hand woven and the weave as well as the rug weights are key factors in the eventual design of the rugs.

"We are excited to be offering natural wool rugs where the wool is undyed and right off the sheep's back in shades ranging from natural, greys to a deep browns," said Piero. "We are also introducing camel hair rugs in natural camel hair colours, made using age-old techniques and finished with herbal washes."

Piero tells Furniture Online that the process of creating a new rug varies; often a new rug will develop from a weave or fibre and then be extended into a coordinate or mini collection. Both Sara Thorn and Piero Gesualdi have extensive fashion backgrounds and this can be seen in the way WorldWeave rugs are extended across a palette with a unifying theme, be it texture, weight or colour.

Piero took five with Furniture Online to chat further on the WorldWeave designer rugs and their bespoke quality; how his architectural background influences the design process; and the stand out products they plan to launch at Decoration + Design Melbourne.

Your pieces have been described as bespoke - can you tell us about some of the designers behind the rugs?

WorldWeave rugs and interior products are designed by Sara Thorn, designer/artist in collaboration with Piero Gesualdi, architectural designer. Sara Thorn specialises in textiles, with a broad range of technical knowledge about weave and fibres.

Sara has extensively researched textile histories and traditions with a particular interest in the vast regional styles of textile production across India. Sara spends at least three months of the year in India overseeing design and production and works very closely realising and executing each rug and product to its high standard. This hands on approach directly with artisans and makers allows for a more fluid design and sampling/production process.

What other aspects of the WorldWeave brand separate it from the market? Why?

WorldWeave rugs and interior products are a unique combination of influences. Piero's architectural approaches to space and form are complemented by Thorn's decorative approach to pattern, colour and textile techniques. It draws on their combined wealth of experience and passion for creativity in design and authentic craftsmanship.
